There Is No Place Like Home

When It Is Time to Make the Transition

Ultimately, the time comes in all people and pet's lives when it is time to transition on. Our responsibility as pet parents is to make that transition as peaceful, comfortable, and gentle as possible for our beloved pets.

At Home Euthanasia

Being able to help pets get their wings at home is an honor. Though it is a tough time on our hearts when our precious pet is ready to make the transition, we have an opportunity to give them dignity, respect, and freedom from pain. Unfortunately, this option is not always available, sometimes we encounter emergency situations where it is best to swiftly perform the procedure. However, when we are able, we provide our pets a final gift.

We form a deep connection between parents, pets, and myself in the home environment even though we may be meeting for the first time. Helping our pet family members make a peaceful transition in the most comfortable way is a privilege for me and a true blessing for families. I hold these pets and families along with each of their unique stories in a special place in my heart. I spent almost three years with Gentle Journey in Arizona where I was able to help families in this way. I have loved listening to each amazing story about the bond and incredible love that our dogs and cats (and even rabbits) shared with their humans.

The process

  • Anesthetic or heavy sedative so your pet feels no pain and is anesthetized before the second injection.

  • The Second injection is an overdose of a barbiturate which acts quickly to turn off the brain, stop the breathing, and then stop the heart.

What to expect during the procedure

  • Some pets leave their eyes open even after euthanasia. This is a result of muscle reflexes and is not painful for our pets.

  • Some pets will urinate or defecate during or after euthanasia, this is normal and we will be prepared with appropriate bedding.

  • Some pets will experience “agonal breaths.” These can look like deep or raspy breaths, movements, or twitches. Again, this is a normal process and our pets are not experiencing any pain with this reflex.
